Poem Path

Students - I do collect poems and do sometimes feel like they are spilling out from my pockets and onto the earth. But you know what, I still always wish to learn and collect more. Poems are my way of understanding the world - both reading poems and writing poems helps me make sense of life on both the dark and the very sunny days. Poems are both song and like medicine to me.
Today's poem is a free verse poem, not following any special rhyme scheme or meter. Yet still, I read the poem many times out loud to listen to the pauses and rhythms and repetition.
What is something you do? Might that be a good start to a notebook entry or poem? "Something I do..."

As I learn more about using digital technologies to share and publish writing, I hope that you will occasionally hold my hand on the journey. Today I truly am collecting poems...favorite poems of favorite people. Please visit my Padlet and leave a note with your name, telling about, and maybe even linking to, one of your own favorite poems. We all become wiser through sharing, and I feel fortunate to share with you.

I love that scattering of 'poem crumbs' Amy. I have been weeding out all my teaching files & there are so many I know I won't return to, but oh, the poems. They seem to be everywhere! Thanks for this lovely thought. Love the padlet too!

ReplyDeleteI love this poem, Amy. The idea of poem crumbs that will take me home, such big truth there! I can't tell you how often poetry plays that role in my life!

ReplyDeleteI feel like I pick up poem crumbs. I don't write many poems, although I gather snippets of poems from observing nature. Sometimes I tuck them into stories. Such a delight.
"When I feel lost in the darkened woods, words will take me home." Again and again the simplicity of your words inspire me. Thanks for the padlet. I want to try to use this tool in my classroom.

ReplyDeleteLovely poem, Amy. When we "carve each word/like a small heart/on a young birch tree" we're really carving them into our own hearts, aren't we? I will add to your Padlet if I can figure out how!

ReplyDeleteOh, this is lovely. I make (but haven't made one in a while) little mini-notebooks using $1 photo albums. I type out poems I love on index cards that fit perfectly. I don't hand-copy poems, but, then again, I don't write my own poems in longhand, usually. Your last stanza is gorgeous!
