I Learned From

Clara and Her Kittens
Photo by One of Clara's Many Admirers

Today's poem was inspired by one of my favorite poems, What I Learned from My Mother by Julia Kasdorf.  You can hear me talk about this and see Clara and her babies in action in the video below. Usually I do write more here, but during this time, I am instead sharing daily writing videos for students and teachers at Keeping a Notebook and will crosspost here on Fridays.

Michelle is hosting today's Poetry Friday roundup over at Today's Little Ditty and she is sharing all about SOUTHWEST SUNRISE, the latest gem from Nikki Grimes, illustrated by Wendell Minor.

As for Poetry Friday, we invite everybody to join in each Friday as we share poems, poem books, poetry ideas, and friendship. Check out my left sidebar to learn where to find this poetry goodness each week of the year.

  1. What a beautiful poem and video, Amy! I had no idea coming here today that I would be blessed with the gift of seeing such adorable kittens. Thank you for everything I've learned from YOU over the years.

  2. Oh, Clara! What a great place you found to have your kittens! I'm so glad that Hope is fostering them and that Clara is safe. Such a beautiful video today with the baby kitties. Thank you for the, 'I Learned From' poem.

  3. I've always loved the poem you shared too. And your "I Learned from Clara" is wonderful. I adore the final lines:
    "...can become so beautiful
    through love."
One year old Robbie watched the video of the kittens with me and loved it. I love your invitations to write and wish I had students to participate.

  4. This poem makes me want to hug it for teaching the valuable lesson of loving through hardship.

  5. Oh how I love this poem, the idea, the kittens and Hope's fostering. Do you have a heater out there for them? I am pretty sure you probably have the snowdust we got here or at least these lower 30s temps. Ugh. Clara won the kittycat mommmy lottery. I would like to hear more about where Hope found her. Clara seems to know instinctively that you are so kind and loving and know cats and animals. The cat whisperers. And your I learned poem starting prompt and your notebook are also writer lottery prizes for all of us. Bravo and thank you. I have to catch up on your Notebook videos. They are pure delight to me. 6. My heart is bursting. I loved your poem, but the video! Clara! The kittens!

I can't wait for school to be out so I can go back and catch up on all your videos. I can't wait to begin the year with YOU as my co-teacher in writing workshop! I have learned SO MUCH from YOU!!!

  7. You showed what mothers can & will do out of love, Amy, and are doing so much for students and teachers this time so different from what we have had before. Wishing you a Happy Mother's Day with all your lovely 'kits'!

  9. Your poem and video are so full of heart and love, which gives us hope, and we all could use lots of that now. Thanks for sharing them Amy, and also sharing Julia Kasdorf's poem, for yes being there is more important than what we say, xo.
