Gran Teatre del Liceu

Plants Love Music
by Amy LV

Students - This week found me enchanted by this true story, a concert for houseplants at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Spain. You may read about it at NPR. When I watch the concert, when I think about the musicians filling this hall, when I think about plants listening to a quartet, when I think about the plants carrying this music in their leaves and stems and roots to the homes of healthcare workers, I choke up.

This is beautiful and whimsical and necessary to me, and I thank the musicians of the Gran Teatre del Liceu for the idea, the work, the concert. When I listen, I choke up.

We can always write about the news. We can always write about what moves us deeply.

Enjoy this Concert for Plants!

Karen is hosting this week's Poetry Friday roundup over at Karen's Got a Blog! with a sweet Father's Day memory about a Norwegian nursery rhyme and a beautiful Norwegian poem too. We invite everybody to join in each Friday as we share poems, poem books, poetry ideas, and friendship. Check out my left sidebar to learn where to find this poetry goodness each week of the year.

  1. Amy: I so love this idea, and then the poem ending in "one fern." Perfect! Really fun. Also: "we are made of music and this music must come out..." My choir director says we must not sing for fear of sharing Covid. I still can't come to terms with that... but I guess I must. Anyway, thanks for your patience with my rant, and thanks for sharing.

  4. I read about this in the news, Amy, and thought it was such an incredible idea. Thank you for capturing the experience so beautifully in your words- "played secrets wrapped in prayers" is my favorite line. "But we are made of music and this music must come out." Thank you.

  7. Beauty and whimsy are necessary, as are nature and gifts and appreciation of hard work (the musicians' work, and the gardeners, and the health care workers). Everyone doing their part to make life better.

  8. This is absolutely beautiful, all the way to the end. I had not heard of this and like to imagine the leaves absorbing the musical notes and carrying them to the recipients of the plants. Your poem captures this moment perfectly, rigth to the gem of the last two lines. Brava!

  12. Concert for plants! It is indeed, amazing. “Bring Music to Life” seems to be the mantra of Gran Teatre del Liceu music troop. The quartet musical performance is a perfect musical treat for music lovers. I just love the idea of music for plants. Thanks, Amy, for sharing a unique post.
