Sing That Poem! - April 2015

April 2015 - National Poetry Month Project

In April 2015 at The Poem Farm, we played a game called Sing That Poem! Every day I posted a new poemsong written to match the meter of a well-known song....but I did not tell which song. I created a matching form so that readers could listen and match poem to song rhythm each day, and then I posted a recording each next day with the answer to the previous day's poem/song match. This allowed readers to see check if they made the match or to simply listen to these many different meters.

For me, this was an excellent challenge in meter exploration, and in some posts, I gave hints to students regarding how to puzzle out the poemsongs by counting syllables.

Below, you will find all of the poems and song recordings from this April 2015 project.  Each original post also includes photographs, drawings, additional information related to idea-finding and my writing process, and student voices and poems. If you are interested in seeing and reading any of these things, simply click the date for any post, and you will be taken to the complete write-up for that day.

For me, one of the best parts of this project was hearing the voices of children as they shared poemsongs they'd written as well as mine.  Too, it was lots of fun to receive e-mails from teachers letting me know that their students figured out a day's tune.

I learned a lot by taking this on, and I hope that you enjoy singing along and perhaps experimenting with various meters in this way yourself.  Whenever we stretch ourselves in a new way, we are in that way new. So, I'm a bit "meter new" after this 30-day challenge.

Enjoy the matching form and complete month's work of poemsongs here.  Much gratitude to all who visited and played along.  That sure made things fun from this end.

This poem has been removed as it hopes to appear
in my forthcoming book, WITH MY HANDS: POEMS ABOUT MAKING THINGS.
I am sorry, and I will try to write a new one with the same meter for this spot.
