Writing the Rainbow Poem #13 - Purple Mountains' Majesty

Welcome to my National Poetry Month project for 2017!  Students - Each day of April 2017, I will close my eyes, and I will reach into my box of 64 Crayola crayons.

Each day I will choose a crayon (without looking), pulling this crayon out of the box. This daily selected crayon will in some way inspire the poem for the next day.  Each day of this month, I will choose a new crayon, thinking and writing about one color every day for a total of 30 poems inspired by colors.

As of April 2, it happened that my poems took a turn to all be from the point of view of a child living in an apartment building.  So, you'll notice this thread running through the month of colors. I'd not planned this...it was a writing surprise.

I welcome any classrooms of poets who wish to share class poems (class poems only please) related to each day's color (the one I choose or your own).  Please post your class poem or photograph of any class crayon poem goodness to our Writing the Rainbow Padlet HERE.  (If you have never posted on a Padlet, it is very easy.  Just double click on the red background, and a box will appear.  Write in this box, and upload any poemcrayon sharings you wish.)

Here is a list of this month's Writing the Rainbow Poems so far:

And now...today's crayon. Purple Mountains' Majesty!

Students - When I drew the color PURPLE MOUNTAINS' MAJESTY, of course the first thing that came to mind was the song America the Beautiful. Because this phrase is so closely linked to this song (have you ever heard it elsewhere?), it seemed right to refer to the song and other lines from it.

I have never seen purple mountains.  And I imagined that my imagined-new-friend might never have seen them either.  But still, even without mountains, I - and this new friend - see many small beauties.  Life is about finding them.

If you are Writing the Rainbow with me, perhaps your color for today might bring a line of a song to mind...or a small ordinary something you see in your days.

Colors can take us anywhere.  And if you'd like to join in with your own poem at our Writing the Rainbow Padlet, please do! It is quite a beautifully hopping place.

Don't miss the links to all kinds of Poetry Month goodness up there in my upper left sidebar.  Happy thirteenth day of National Poetry Month!

  1. Oh, I really love this one. I love that it's about the city experience and what's beautiful about it.

  2. What fun, Amy! You will need to come visit me to see those "purple mountains' majesty"! Broad visions and small ones, all wonderful!

  3. Oh, I love the continuing voice of our apartment dwelling, city friend. Soon after I met my Kansas born husband, I was introduced to those amber waves of grain with a beauty all their own.

  4. I've seen purple mountains, but I've never seen pink-footed pigeons bathing in the rain. Next time I'm in the city on a rainy day, I'll look for them. Thanks, Amy!

  5. I want to take the speaker on a trip and buy a bagel for the pigeons.

  6. Love the form this poem took with the "I have never" to what the character does know and notice. The fine work of poetry.
