HELLO MY NAME IS - Day 29

Hello, Poetry Friends! This month I am sharing poems written in the voice of Little Red Riding Hood, and I invite you to join me in writing in the voice of someone else too. You might choose a fairy tale character or a book character or a person from history or anyone else real or imagined. These are your poems, so you make the decisions. Each April day, I will share my poem and a little bit about writing poetry. Mostly, we’ll just be writing in short lines with good words and not worrying about rhyming. Meaning first. Our focus this month will be adopting the perspective of another…for 30 days. I invite you to join me in this project! To do so, simply:

1. Choose a character from fiction or history or somewhere else in the world of space and time, and commit to writing a daily poem in this person's voice for the 30 days of April 2025. You might even choose an animal.

2. Write a new poem for each day of April. Feel free to print and find inspiration from this idea sheet that I will be writing from all month long.

And now for today!


Students - Today's poem is perhaps less the story of a song and more of a truth combined with a song. I decided to play with the words of "You Are My Sunshine," and if you know the song, you will be able to find some of the lines and images in the verse. I've never done anything just like this before, and it was quite interesting to tuck those songbits in between the storylines.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD'S POEMS SO FAR

And now for today!

Students - Today's poem is really about SOMETHING NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT FRANK. And maybe it's just Lou who doesn't know that her dog's father is the original Big Bad Wolf...I don't know for sure. But it is interesting for me to think about. Frank had a childhood, and now he has his own life as a big grown-up wolf dog playing kickball and writing poetry. We decide who we become in life, so much because of the love and understanding of others. We can always change, no matter our circumstances.

This relationship was a surprise to me - I believe that I woke in the night and realized that these two were related. 

Remember - while we control some of our writing, there is something good about leaving a window open for surprise. Allow your own thoughts to surprise you!

And now for today!


Students - Today's poem is a triolet, a form I really like writing in. oday I wrote this one by looking at another triolet I wrote a while ago and copied the form just from looking at the lines. What do you notice about this form just by comparing the two triolets below?
You can read more about the triolet form in my February 27, 2025 post if you wish to learn the specifics.

Well, we are winding up the last days of National Poetry Month, and to give myself more choices, I added a few possibilites for poem topics. Feel free to add these to your grid and mind and heart if you wish:

Here you can see where I have been keeping track of this month's poems. This organizational sheet has been helping me all month, and it is also giving me some ideas about planning future projects. It's messy, just like I am.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD'S POEMS SO FAR

And now for today!

Students - Do you remember back on April 7, when we learned that Orla/Goldilocks paints flowers on the Bears' chairs? Well, that showed up again today in one of Lou's memories. One of the most interesting things about writing is that if a person writes a lot, they learn what they like to write about, discover themes and repeating words and images in their own words. This can be surprising, and it's always fascinating. A couple of Aprils ago, I wrote another poem about someone painting a chair rescued from the trash. I like this image very much and also like painted chairs a lot.

Is it garbage day here where I live today, and did I roll the garbage and recycling out to the road this morning? Yes. Is this connected to today's poem? Maybe. Did I toss out a chair? No.

Something to think about: Write a lot to know who you are.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD'S POEMS SO FAR

And now for today!

Students - I chose what to write about today by looking at the categories remaining on my sheet above. Since Lou was reading a book yesterday, today she ponders the bookmark. Maybe I wrote this poem today because I spent some of last evening looking at old Easter photographs of our children, amazed by how time does feel so slow and fast at the same time. Our lives seep into everything we write. This is one reason that I am careful about how I spend my time. It matters not only for my life...but for my writing life too.

I may play around with adding some new categories and poem ideas as I think through the last third of this month's poems. It has been strangely nourishing and joyful for me to write as Little Red Riding Hood this month, and right now I am wondering whether I will keep doing so on my own once April ends.

(I learned about Vocaroo in a school yesterday. 
I am trying to find something that plays easily in schools. Does this?)

Students - This month, I am inspired by my friend Tricia, writer at The Miss Rumphius Effect, to try some new forms. She shares many at her site, and so today I wrote my first etheree.

An etheree is a ten line poem that begins with one syllable per line and ends with 10 syllables, growing like this:

Or, the form can move in the opposite syllable direction, beginning with 10 syllables and ending with 1 as I have done above:

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD'S POEMS SO FAR

And now for today!

Students - Today's poem brings us back to Poem 1 in this series, "First Poem," in which Lou describes herself as (more a hiker, mushroom seeker). It felt like a good day for LRRH to go mushroom seeking (Hunting? Seeking? Which word to choose?) with her Nan, to write a poem showcasing this hobby these two share.

Today's is a free verse poem with no real rhyme or meter. The poem part relies on line breaks and white space. Because Lou and Nan are walking through deep forest, the line breaks moving along and indenting from left to write mirror their footsteps and their gathering. The white space creates pauses and slows down reading, quiets the poem down.

One thing you might choose to notice is that I name specific mushrooms: morels, lions mane, hen of the woods. When a person has a hobby, that persons know the specific words around that hobby, so of course Lou and Nan know and use actual specific mushroom names. When you reread your own writing, both poems and stories and nonfiction and opinion too, reread and revise to make any nouns more specific if you can. This will create more vivid and clear pictures in the minds of your readers.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD'S POEMS SO FAR

And now for today!

Students - Today we learn a little bit about where Lou lives. I do not think that in a month's time we'll be able to meet everyone and learn their actual names or much about them, but at least we have a sense of Little Red Riding Hood's neighborhood. Did you know that all of these folks live near each other?

Today's verse leans very heavily on the double dactyl form. I do not follow all of the rules for a double dactyl today, only the meter...and it helped me! I adore playing with meters of different songs and poems, and writing in different rhythms and beats presses me into writing with different words and ideas.

Playing with meter today also made me very picky about which of Lou's neighbors to name today. Their names had to fit the double dactyl meter. I visited this His and Hers Bookclub blog post that lists nineteen fairy tale characters and chose from there.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD'S POEMS SO FAR

And now for today!


Students - Today's poem is simply a description poem of now, of something Lou is doing in the moment. It is written in the present tense, as if she is describing the scene around her, its colors and smells and sounds. In a way, it is a small moment poem and a list poem, and I like imagining this peaceful scene of LRRH surrounded by some of her favorite things.

If you are writing in the voice of another this month, or writing in your own voice, consider trying this. Write in the now. Where are you? What do you see, hear, smell, feel, taste in the air? Make a list and turn the list into a poem. Turn it into a different poem. Which do you prefer? If you like, combine them!

Notice - today's poem does not rhyme or follow a special meter/beat, but it does end with a short line. This is one way to bring a poem to a close. The short line feels like a punctuation mark indicating - This poem is over now.

Yesterday was such a fun Family Day at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Several authors read to children, and the museum staff and volunteers made crafts with the children. For my book, WITH MY HANDS, POEMS ABOUT MAKING THINGS, children had the opportunity to make sock puppets or fingerprint pictures! Thank you to everyone at the Burchfield Penney for putting together such a wonderful day for families and authors too.
